The history of Aston Villa Football club

If you hear these words, you are about to watch Aston Villa playing! Aston Villa, also known as The Lions, was founded in 1874 by Jack Hughes, Frederick Matthews, Walter Price and William Scattergood. This professional football association has been existing for 141 years. The very first match Aston villa played was against the resident Aston Brook St Mary’s Rugby Team. The match was played as such: First half was under Rugby rules while the second half was played under Football rules. Aston Villa, being one of the oldest founded Football team has an interesting history.

This football association are the establishing members of the Football league and Premier League in 1888 and 1992 respectively. Under the management of George from August 1884 to May 1926, Aston villa has won 6 FA Cups and 6 Division One Championship by the end of Queen Victoria’s reign. They have been the only one of five English Clubs to be crowned as the Champions of Europe, after winning the European Cup in 1981-1982. Aston Villa also participated in the original 1888 Football league, alongside 11 other teams. The team’s traditional kit colours are claret shirts, with sky blue sleeves, which matches their sky blue socks and white shorts. A wild Lion is their traditional badge, which was brought by the Club’s chairman William McGregor to pay tribute to the Royal Standard of Scotland.

The Double was won by Aston Villa in 1887 further to which they moved into their current home, the Aston Lower grounds. Followers of the team refer to the stadium as “Villa Park”, despite that the stadium has not been declared as such yet. The “Villa Park”, being a UEFA 5- Star ranked Arena, is the leading football stadium in the English Midlands, and the eighth largest stadium in England. “Villa park” has a reputation of its own, for having hosted international football for 3 different centuries, and having witnessed 55 FA CUP Semi- final matches. The status of the stadium only adds to the pride of the team.

Other than exceling at Football, Aston Villa Football club is also involved in humankinds. While the front of the shirt is normally reserved for high- paying sponsors, Aston Villa has dedicated this part to the Acorns Children Hospice, in the first match of the Premier league. This was initiated to promote visibility for charity, and to raise funds. Apart from this generous step, Aston Villa also funded the hospice care, and provide players’ visits to hospitals.

In 2006, Aston Villa created the “Aston Villa Hall of Fame”, to celebrate their notable players: Gordon Cowans, Eric Houghton, Brian Little, Dennis Mortimer, Stiliyan Petrov, Rond Saunders, Peter With, Paul Mcgrath and Peter McParland.
