Peterborough United’s latest signing Steven Taylor is targeting an immediate return to the Championship after joining the club last week.

The 31-year-old defender, who made over 200 appearances for boyhood club Newcastle, ended last season at Ipswich Town, but the Tractor Boy’s decided against offering him a new contract.

After weighing up his options, and spending time on trial at fellow League One side Doncaster Rovers, Taylor decided a move to Posh was the best thing for his career, and he now wants to help Grant McCann’s side return to the second tier.

Speaking to Radio Cambridgeshire, the experienced centre-back said: “Obviously the main goal is promotion, to get the club back to where it should be in the Championship.

“We’ve got great team morale here. We’ve got to keep it strong and we’ve got a great chance.”

Following his release from Newcastle, Taylor enjoyed a short spell in the MLS last year with Portland Timbers, and was offered the chance of a move abroad again this summer after a deal at Portman Road never materialised.

However, the decision to stay on English shores was a no-brainer for Taylor, who sees his move to Peterborough as a ‘long-term venture’, and he’s now raring to go ahead of the season’s opener at home to Plymouth on Saturday.

“Every side in League One is difficult, they are strengthening and building. There are no weak sides in this league, anybody can beat anybody on their day,” he said.

“We had a chat in the changing room, we can’t carry anybody or you’re going to find it very difficult. We won’t underestimate any team we play against and hopefully if we can have good home form, that will stand us in good stead.
