Rotherham United have confirmed the signing of winger Jerome Thomas on a deal until the end of the season.
The former Crystal Palace and West Brom midfielder has been on trial at the relegation threatened club for the past four weeks and boss Neil Warnock, familiar with Thomas after their time at Selhurst Park two years ago, has wasted no time in making the 32-year-old his first signing at Rotherham.
Thomas has been without a club since leaving Palace at the end of the 2014/15 season, and as a measure of trying to bring the midfielder up to match fitness quickly he turned out for Rotherham's reserves on Wednesday in a 1-1 draw against Scunthorpe.
“I have been training everyday and building my fitness up,” Thomas said.
“The manager and Kevin (Blackwell) have come in and they wanted to get the deal done, I have signed until the end of the season and we all share the same common objective which is to try and keep the club in the Championship.
“Initially it looked as though I was going to the USA or Asia but the opportunity arose to come and train here and to see if both parties were happy.
“I have kept myself fit, the training has been very good and Warney (Paul Warne) the fitness coach has been great with me helping me do extra.
“I managed to get 90 minutes under my belt in the reserves last week, and I will be looking to get as many minutes in as possible.”
The signing is subject to Football League ratification, but Thomas should be cleared to play in Saturday's game against an in form Burnley side. Rotherham lie in 22nd place in the Championship, five points adrift of safety and have also taken former Watford defender Lloyd Doyley on trial.
