Carlisle boss Keith Curle says his side must show confidence and be ‘aggressive’ as they try and turn around their stuttering promotion chase.

After a brilliant start to the season that saw the Cumbrians go undefeated in their first 16 games, many thought Curle’s men could romp promotion, but in recent weeks they’ve done something they’re not used to – lose.

After Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to Cambridge, the second time in a row they have conceded three at home without reply, Carlisle have lost four consecutive games and are in danger of being left behind in the race to League One.

However, despite disappointing defeats that included fellow high-fliers Plymouth and Portsmouth beating them, Curle’s side have only dropped two league places and he said: “We need to go back to basics, scrap and fight for everything which means we need a level of aggression about us.

“Teams won’t come here and roll over. We weren’t competitive and aggressive enough [against Cambridge], we weren’t demanding with our movement, demanding of the ball.

“There wasn’t there that level of confidence going forward, we were disjointed and not on the same page.”

Confidence is an issue Curle believes is heavily affecting both his players and the club’s fans, who are desperate to see their side reach the third tier for the first time since 2014.

With tough games against Luton and play-off chasing Mansfield to come, Carlisle’s confidence will be tested further and the boss said: “There’s a nervousness about the group”There’s a nervousness about the supporters as well. They’re desperate for us to and the players want to do well to get over the line and finish top three.”
