Caldwell leaves Latics five months after securing League One title

Athletic have parted company with manager following a difficult start to life back in the off the back of last season's title triumph.

Three points clinched from their last four matches left David Sharpe with “the toughest decision I've had to make since becoming Chairman,” as the languish in 23rd position.

In an official statement, the club confirmed it, “reluctantly wished to announce that we have parted company with manager Gary Caldwell, with immediate effect.”

Sharpe, who consulted Latics legend Roberto Martinez prior to appointing Caldwell in April 2015, added: “We deservedly won the League One title last season. However, we have not managed to carry on that momentum into this season and, after careful consideration over a period of time, I feel that we need to act now in the best long term interests of the club.

“We thank Gary for all the hard work he has put in and wish him all the best for the future.

“We need to identify a new manager who can have an immediate impact and deliver success in the long term.”

The market has installed Karl as the early favourite to take over following his departure from Stadium:mk on Monday, with Ryan Giggs also being touted as an option to quell relegation fears.
